The Legend of Ochi (2025): Cast, Plot, Release Date & What to Expect from the Mythical Adventure

The Legend of Ochi (2025) – A Mythical Journey Into the Unknown

A24 is once again taking audiences into an imaginative, genre-bending world with The Legend of Ochi, a visually rich and emotionally resonant fantasy adventure from debut director Isaiah Saxon. With a talented ensemble cast including Helena Zengel, Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson, and Willem Dafoe, this mystical tale is set to cast its spell on audiences when it opens in limited theaters on April 18, 2025, followed by a wide release on April 25.

🌀 A Story of Curiosity, Courage, and Connection

Set in the remote northern reaches of a fictional island called Carpathia, the story follows Yuri (Zengel), a curious farm girl

raised on fear—especially of the mysterious, elusive forest-dwelling creatures known as the Ochi. Her village teaches caution and silence after dark, a life of quiet obedience. But Yuri, bold and inquisitive, breaks the mold.

Everything changes when she stumbles upon an injured baby Ochi, alone and vulnerable. Against the ingrained warnings of her people, she makes a brave decision: to return the creature to its family. Her journey is a sweeping odyssey through dangerous terrain, ancient mysteries, and encounters with beings both wondrous and threatening. Along the way, Yuri learns that the true monsters may not be who—or what—she was told.

A Spellbinding World Built From Heart and Craft

What sets The Legend of Ochi apart is its rich world-building, rooted in folklore, wonder, and a tactile, almost dreamlike sense of nature. Saxon, known for his work with Encyclopedia Pictura, brings a painterly vision to his debut, blending earthy textures with ethereal storytelling. Cinematographer Evan Prosofsky and editor Paul Rogers (Oscar-winner for Everything Everywhere All at Once) enhance this ethereal world with sweeping landscapes and intimate moments.

Composer David Longstreth of Dirty Projectors brings a haunting and heartfelt score that pulses through the narrative, elevating the emotional stakes of Yuri’s journey.

👥 A Stellar Cast to Ground the Fantasy

  • Helena Zengel (News of the World) shines as Yuri, carrying much of the emotional weight of the film with both grit and vulnerability.

  • Willem Dafoe portrays Maxim, a mysterious outcast who may know more about the Ochi than he lets on.

  • Finn Wolfhard adds youthful complexity as Petro, a local boy torn between loyalty to tradition and an urge to break free.

  • Emily Watson commands every scene as Dasha, Yuri’s stern guardian and a keeper of old ways.

🎬 A24’s Next Great Fantasy Epic?

With its $10 million budget, practical effects, and indie heart, The Legend of Ochi is shaping up to be a fantasy film that feels both epic and intimate. It’s not just a tale of magical creatures—it’s a meditation on fear, trust, and the courage to forge your own path. Think Princess Mononoke meets The Witch, but with a uniquely Western indie flair.

Don’t miss this otherworldly adventure when it hits theaters April 18 (limited) and April 25 (wide).

Whether you’re a fan of fantasy, creature features, or stories that tug at your heart while dazzling your eyes, The Legend of Ochi promises to be one of 2025’s most unforgettable cinematic journeys. 🌲✨
