What if your child’s grief… could draw monsters? Welcome to Sketch—a wildly original, darkly hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt comedy-horror coming to theaters this summer. Directed by Seth Worley, this unique film blurs the lines between reality and art, childhood trauma and fantastical chaos, grief and healing—all told with a splash of crayon and a whole lot of heart.
🖍️ The Premise: Grief Gets a Life of Its Own
10-year-old Amber is dealing with the loss of her mother the only way she knows how—through her art. Her sketchbook becomes her emotional outlet, filled with quirky yet disturbing drawings that express the pain she can’t put into words. But when the sketchbook accidentally falls into a mysterious magical pool, those drawings come to life. And they’re not here for hugs.
Suddenly, Amber’s small town is overrun by monstrous creations made of crayon wax, chalk dust, and emotional turmoil, and the only way to stop them is to confront the grief that brought them into existence.
🧠 Heart Meets Horror… With Humor
At the center of the story is Taylor Wyatt, Amber’s father, played by the ever-expressive Tony Hale (Arrested Development,
Veep). A widowed dad just trying to hold it together, Taylor’s world is turned upside down as his daughter’s sketchbook starts manifesting chaos. Alongside him is D'Arcy Carden (The Good Place) as Liz, Taylor’s sister and the comic voice of reason who’s trying (and failing) to sell the family home amidst the monster mayhem.
The cast also features breakout performances from Bianca Belle as Amber and Kue Lawrence as her older brother Jack—both of whom shine as kids caught between mourning and magic.
👾 What to Expect:
Creatures made of crayons and chalk that look like they leaped from a child’s worst nightmare
A heartfelt exploration of grief and healing, seen through the eyes of a child
Hilariously absurd moments that balance out the terror
Seth Worley’s sharp direction, blending whimsy and horror in a way that feels fresh and cinematic
🎬 A Festival Favorite Turned Mainstream Must-See
Sketch made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2024, earning critical praise for its originality and emotional depth. Critics called it “a perfect storm of heart and horror” and “one of the most creatively original genre films in years.” Now, Angel Studios is bringing the magic (and monsters) to the big screen this August.

✏️ Final Thoughts:
Sketch is more than just a monster movie. It’s a story about loss, imagination, and the importance of letting kids process emotions their own way—even if that way comes to life and nearly destroys the town. Equal parts moving and madcap, it’s a film for anyone who’s ever found solace in art—and proof that sometimes, the messiest doodles have the most meaning.
